Dr. Fraedrich has published
research on decay detection & evaulation
in many journals.. |
After that
Dr. Bruce Fraedrich, vice president of research
for Barlett Tree, brought us the first of
3 lectures on decay dectection & evaluation.
|

After lunch,
provided by Bekker's barbeque, Randy Stamen,
attorney-at-law, talked to us about the
law & arboriculture, using 5 of his
personal cases.
|

We also had
a pest update
by Dr. Karen Robb
(sorry Karen, I didn't get pictures).

predacious wasp of
the redgum-lerp psyllid
is spreading from its release points.

|
Dr. James
Adaskaveg, University of Calif., gave an
excellent talk on white & brown rot
fungi.

Dr.
Fraedrich began with pre-climb risk
assessment for everyone..

Rip
Thompkins, ArborMaster, spent the day
teaching climbing techniques for climbers.
|

The arborists
went to
a 4 station round-robin consisting of
Dr. Bruce Fraedrich,
Bartlett Tree Research Lab
with decay evaluation,

Mary
Matava, Agriservice, had a soil evaluation
workshop,
hands-on and dirty,
|
|
|
|
Kathleen
Edwards, CA Dept of Forestry, did ID
of wood-boring insects,
|
|
Dr.
James Adaskaveg, UC Riverside, did wood
rotting fungi with alot of samples.
|

In the
afternoon, Dr. Fraedrich demonstrated the
air-spade to excavate the root collar.
|
|
Once exposed,
the
collar and buttress roots could be examined
for signs of decay, girdling roots, etc.
|
|
He also
used the Resistograph to evaluate decay
at the base of the tree as well as the root-collar
and buttress roots.
|
|
Here, he
uses a drill
with a 1/8 th in bit to determine the amount
of sound wood.
|
