Urban Tree Foundation, Visalia, CA | Mr.
Kempf discussed structural pruning techniques for young, medium-aged and mature
trees based on the latest tree biomechanics research and how to use these techniques
in our daily practice. Real-world scenarios and long-term pruning experiences
with landscape and urban trees will show you how trees respond and change when
pruned by various methods. |

Managing the Root Environment -Mr. Dennis Pittenger,
UCCE Riverside | Tree
roots are opportunistic, resulting in millions of dollars being spent annually
to repair pavement and other infrastructure damaged by their invasive growth.
Fortunately, there are some effective strategies for reducing and, possibly,
eliminating tree root damage in urban areas when they are used in combination
in the design and maintenance of a landsscape. | |

Kellum provided updates on invasive insects that affect the tree industry
including recent finds of the red palm weevil (left photo), Citrus

Arboriculture & the Law -Mr. Randall Stamen,
Esq. | Randy
Stamen specializes in arboriculture law and presented the latest legal decisions
that affect our industry as well as gave insight into legal issues, records,
expert witnesses and your responsibilities as a tree care professional. | |

Scenarios for Action! Input & Discussion for Treatment
Options. Mr. Robert Walton,
Registered Consulting Arborist, led the seminar speakers (Randell Stamen, Dennis
Pittenger &Alden Pedersen) in the presentation, discussion and audience interaction
as we analyzed local tree management scenarios and discussed the results of arborists
actions. Posters of the scenarios were on display
all day so the audience could begin to formulate questions and possible answers.

Day Saturday, August 27th The
2011 PTCA Field Day featured four concurrent programs packed with practical information
for Tree Care Professionals. The Arborist programs included a local bus tour to
examine tree scenarios with the seminar speakers. For Tree Workers and Ground
Crew, English and Spanish workshops were included on safety and risk management,
equipment, climbing techniques and finishing with the PTCA Jamboree event. |
